What’s in the shop

John Deere 400 Mixer

This mixer had a bad upper gear box bearing.  As you can see the bearing is missing some of the balls. The main shaft of this gear box has splines that go inside the auger from the bottom.  In this case the splined shaft and auger were bonded together as one.  Nothing we could do, short of cutting the auger would separate these two units.  So, we had to lower the auger so we could get to the upper bolts of the gear box and disassemble it.  Leaving the main gear box shaft in the auger.  It worked.  Then the unit was disassembled and new bearings and seals were installed.  I'm not sure why but all three gears were in great shape.  The gearbox had no oil in it whatsoever.   More like mud in the bottom of the gear box.

When we replaced one of the drive hubs from John Deere, it came as a 3 bolt hub not a 4 bolt as was the one on the unit.  The other matching hub was also a 4 bolt.  So what you may say.  The bolt pattern does not match up for a 3 bolt versus a 4 bolt so we had to drill the 4 bolt hub (2 holes) to match the new 3 bolt hub.  In the parts book it even shows one hub as a 3 bolt and the matching hub as a 4 bolt.    Why John Deere did this is anyone’s guess.  If you ever have to drill the hub out to match the other, you should be aware that the aluminum sheer pins are either a metric or machine size.  We ended up using bailer sheer bolts and nuts instead of the clips and pins.

The customer has the unit back on the farm and back to work.

Thank you for visiting.
