Trains ?  I thought we were into farm tractors not 400 ton work horses.   Well, Owosso Michigan did host the 2009 International Train Festival. So it’s only fitting that we honor the iron horses of the past by bringing them alive again and to your home.

Welcome back to Bob’s Corner.  I will be the first to tell you that I like trains but I am not in love with them.  Trains are the biggest moving piece of machinery on earth but when I grew up we lived beside a train track in 1969 and we lived in town where trains were common in the 1960’s.  When I got married we had a train track right in our back yard. It was only about 150 feet from my house and it was used by a lot of trains until they tore it up.  They say the property is going to Rails to Trails or something like that.   My daughter Rebecca and I watched the trains go by when she was little and I always told her never to go near the tracks.  In the winter they would park extra train cars right behind my house.  An extra set of tracks were in Shepardsville for loading and unloading of goods about 100 years ago.  They even had a depot and post office here.

Machines that size need respect and keep your distance.  So when I heard about the train festival they were talking about 30,000 plus people coming to a 15,000 resident town.  They came alright.  From all 50 states and 14 countries as stated by the local newspaper.  A state policeman told me that he heard the actual number was more like 70,000 and I believe it traveling through town on Saturday.

That’s why I am posting the train information for all of you to see.  Some of you, like me, never heard of an “International Train Show” but you have now.  Owosso wants to make the Owosso Train Festival a yearly event and I hope it goes well for them.  They even have a train museum. Train number Pierre Marquette # “1225” which they made the movie “Polar Express”  from has its home right here in Owosso.  By the way the “1225” means it was built December 25th. Really! It was.

So, if you are in Owosso, Michigan check out the train museum downtown and on October 3rd, 2009 I heard they are having the “1225” and its sister train “765” which is in the video on this page running the tracks with passengers for fall tours.

I hope those who enjoy trains as much as I do tractors and snowmobiling will keep the tradition of days gone by going.  It reminds me of the antique tractors but on a much, much larger scale.
